West Highland Dairy
The dairy is a very small commercial dairy with a shop that is open from 10 am till 6 pm every day. It was established nearly 30 years ago by David and Katherine Biss and their family.
The milk was originally supplied by a flock of milking sheep and milk purchased from the dairy company in Nairn. Like most businesses it has changed with time and now purchases milk from Highland Fine Cheeses in Tain. The owners are hoping to transfer the business to a local community group and after helping with the setting up of the community business the plan is to continue teaching dairy skills and retiring.
The dairy makes a range of hard and soft cheese as well as a brie and blue cheese. These are sold at our shop and supplied to hotels and shops in the locality. Our range includes a variety of speciality cheeses: Ascaig Blue, Craig Mhaol, Coulommier, Crowdie, Black Douglas, Caise Cruin – all delicious! We also have a selection of jams and chutneys.
Our ice cream is delicious and only sold in our shop, the flavours are prepared from fruit grown in the garden. Yoghurt is made traditionally and our creme fraiche is considered to be the best. For those with a sweet tooth cheesecakes and Cranachan are very tempting.
Three-day courses covering the skills needed to make cheese are scheduled for most of the summer months and you can take home examples of the products that you make. Information on our website.
You are most welcome to come and park your car by the house and visit the dairy shop or have a picnic on our lawn; our friendly collie cross ‘Bracken’ will keep you entertained.
Based in the village of Achmore by Kyle of Lochalsh in the Scottish Highlands.
Achmore is just ten minutes drive from Plockton – take the first left out of the village, marked Strome. We respectfully ask that all dogs are kept in vehicles at all times so as not to worry our sheep.
